These outerwear pieces often require laminated or coated fabrics that offer wind protection and water resistance without compromising breathability. Silicone Knee and Seat Grip

The application of silicone knee and seat grip is one of the most technically sensitive stages in equestrian apparel production. From a factory perspective, grip sourcing, formulation, application method, and curing process all directly impact product performance and longevity.

Grip must provide controlled traction against the saddle without restricting rider movement. Incorrect grip density or placement can negatively affect comfort and function, leading to brand dissatisfaction and potential rejections. Equally important is sourcing a silicone compound that will not rub off, peel, or degrade after repeated washing and stretching.

Poor bonding is a common failure point in riding breeches, jodhpurs, and riding tights. Reliable grip should remain flexible, maintain texture, and retain adhesion after extensive wash testing—often 30 to 50 cycles minimum for UK brands. The design of the silicone grip pattern is also a key factor here and many designs on the market fail because the designer didn’t understand the manufacturing process or the abrasion requirements of the silicone against the leather saddle.

High quality-focused equestrian manufacturers will conduct in-house testing for wash durability, abrasion resistance, and stretch recovery. Grip cracking or lifting at the edges is a clear indicator of incorrect sourcing or application parameters, reinforcing the importance of experience in this area.

Sampling, Prototyping, and Wear Testing

Factories play a vital role during the sampling and prototyping stage. Multiple iterations are often required to refine fit, grip placement, fabric performance and fit. Wear testing typically involves real horse riding scenarios, where issues such as seam pressure, waistband movement, or grip behaviour become apparent.
